Holly is a powerful protective wood that good for use against evil, but it also represents dreams and fertility. The veela hair as a wand core means that you are slightly unpredictable but very powerful.
I take some exception to the rating in matyrdom. . . but I think that's from subscribing to the Harry Potter ethos, where only the bad preemptively kill people. . but I would think the idea is less to matyr oneself for your cause than make the other guy matyr himself for his. . .
